Em’s Art for Beirut

The disastrous explosion of irresponsibly stockpiled ammonium nitrate in Beirut, Lebanon literally shook the country to its core. Already suffering from a complacent government response to the global pandemic and consequential healthcare and economic crisis, the explosion immediately devastated the city and left it’s occupants fleeing for their lives. The aftermath has left hundreds dead, thousands injured, and many more homeless. While many of us in the United States watched the news with sadness in our hearts, others took a more proactive approach. One particular artist named Em jumped to her painting and got busy fundraising for the Red Cross crisis response in Beirut.

From her garage in Santa Barbara, California Em was able to pour her emotion and personal connection to Beirut into an art piece titled, “Brethren.” “Creativity is for everyone, there are no gatekeepers,” says Em. “Often times it’s a refuge for those of us going through everyday motions and I think everyone should have access to that freedom. Art is for the people.”

Art is for the people

“This piece means a lot to me because it is my first expression of my perception of the heritage my family comes from. It’s a small nod to my cultural upbringing, as well as the life of my father, without whom I would not be here. This piece is dedicated to Khalil Elzein and to the people of Lebanon. Special mention to Essam, who’s family changed the course of ours in ways we will never know.”

100% of the proceeds for a 16″ x 20″ print of the artwork starting at $90 will be donated to the Red Cross to help the people of Beirut recover. Email Em directly for orders hello@emelzein.com
